The Best Things to Do Near Haworth, Yorkshire

Ask anyone who's visited and they'll tell you the same thing: Haworth is a must-see. This famous West Yorkshire village - draped across a scenic hillside on the edge of the Pennine moors - has been drawing visitors for well over a century, and it's easy to see why.

From Clematis Cottage in nearby Laycock, Haworth is just a short drive away. We've compiled our favourite things to do in and around the village, whether you're spending a full day or just a few hours exploring.

1. Walk the Cobbled Main Street

Haworth's Main Street is one of the most photographed streets in Yorkshire, and rightly so. The iconic, cobbled lane is lined with independent shops, cafes, galleries, and pubs. It's best explored slowly, with no particular agenda.

Don't miss Cobbles & Clay (No. 70) - a brilliant spot for breakfast or lunch where you can also decorate your own pottery. Further down, Tap & Tonic (No. 17) is the perfect spot for if you fancy something a little stronger.

2. Visit the Brontë Parsonage Museum

The Parsonage - the Georgian home where Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë lived and wrote - is the cultural heart of Haworth. It's remarkably intact, and wandering through the rooms where Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights were written is a genuinely moving experience, even if you're not a literary devotee.

The museum tells the full story of the family, including their remarkable father Patrick and brother Branwell. We recommend pre-booking, particularly in summer.

3. Ride the Worth Valley Steam Railway

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is one of England's best-preserved heritage railways, running through five villages along a beautiful five-mile valley. It's a genuine steam railway with lovingly restored engines and carriages that feel like a step back in time.

The line runs through Haworth, Oakworth, and on to Keighley. Oakworth Station famously appeared in the 1970 film of The Railway Children. Blink and you’ll miss it, Damems Station holds the title of one of the smallest railway stations in Britian. Check the timetable at kwvr.co.uk - most weekends throughout the year have services running.

4. Walk to Top Withens

The moorland walk from Haworth to Top Withens - the ruined farmhouse long associated with Wuthering Heights - is one of the great walks in West Yorkshire. The full route is around 8 miles return, climbing through open heather moorland with sweeping views across the Pennines.

It's exposed walking, so go prepared with waterproofs and decent footwear whatever the season. The reward is one of the most atmospheric landscapes in England, starting from the Brontë Parsonage and following the well-signed Brontë Way.

5. Eat, Drink, and Relax

Haworth has a genuinely excellent dining scene for a village of its size. The Hawthorn on Main Street is an award-winning pub with fantastic food and a roaring log fire - well worth a dinner reservation. Haworth Old Hall (dating to 1621) offers a warming atmosphere perfect for lunch. For your curry fix, Haworth Tandoori on Mill Hey is highly recommended.

The Treehouse Bar & Kitchen on Oak Street rounds things off with a lively atmosphere, plenty of drinks, and reliable food.

6. Explore the Wider Area

Clematis Cottage is brilliantly placed for exploring further. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is only a stone’s throw away. Bolton Abbey, Skipton Castle, Ilkley's Cow & Calf Rocks, and the spa town of Harrogate are all within easy reach - making the cottage an ideal base for a getaway.
